My filter gets like this about 2-3 times a month. It's on my 10g planted tank. Is this algae? Poop? My filter pad gets covered in it too, it's very slimy. It was a LOT worse but I was in the middle of cleaning it and I figured I'd get a picture. It's a 10g with about an inch of dirt capped with sand. The stock is 3 molly fry, 4 cory cats, one hillstream loack, one kuhli loach, 4 ghost shrimp one cherry shrimp and 3 neon tetras. It also has a piece of driftwood, some rocks, Amazon swords, baby tears, dwarf hair grass and one other plant that I forget the name. The water is pretty cloudy too.i know it's kind of overstocked but they will get a bigger tank once we move. Thank you.

That's broken down waste, uneaten food, poop, decayed plant matter and so forth. You could probably stand to replace that filter with a larger one.
