So I'm thinking of setting up a sump using my over flow as a wet dry and my sump set up with some filter socks and k1 ish media

It would go filter pad then bio balls in overflow

Then filter socks move over to a bunch of k1 media then back to main

You can't really have too much biological media. The only way I'd say there could be too much is if you are displacing a huge amount of water

From my understanding certain beneficial bacteria feed directly on ammonia creating nitrites, and some feed on the nitrites creating nitrates. We get rid of the nitrates through water changes, or if you have plants like pothos feeding off your tank water that will lower nitrates too.
