i think it depends on how light or heavy your gear is, the drag strength on your reel, and the line you use.
going ultra-light will usually mean shorter, maybe 5 ft rod, smaller reel, 5 lb test will give you a good, long, more difficult fight
going heavy with usually longer, maybe 7-8 ft heavy action rods, with like 65 lb test will make things easy, and shorter, like for fishing in lots of vegetation

Does longer rods mean shorter fights, or does shorter rods mean shorter fights?
No. Fight depends on many factors. I have many rods of different sizes, I'd say it's species specific and how you choose to fight it.

For pike I'd go anywhere for 6'6" to 10'6". Don't really need any longer like you would for salmon or trout. Will also depend if you fish with a bait caster, spinning, fly, or centre pin reel. Above recommendation is for spinning, not too sure about bait casting or fly, probably in the middle, and i wouldn't recommend using a centre pin reel for pike, though could be fun.
