So right now I have two sponges in my overflow before the water goes down the drain into my sump.

Can I add a bunch of crushed coral into my overflow after the sponges before the drain? My thoughts is it will help buffer the ph by the water flowing thru the crushed coral.

the crushed coral will help raise the pH, depending on your normal water pH. it will also dissolve over time.... and trap detritus and become a nitrate factory....

Isn't every filter we use a nitrate factory? I mean that's the point of our bio filters is to break down ammonia to nitrite then nitrite to nitrate and we use water changes to get rid of the nitrate....

And I would be using a sponge to collect anything that went over the overflow lip just as I do now before the water hits my bio balls

Yea I was trying to think of a way to do it in bags or something so I can remove em easier but idk yet or maybe a basket I mean I could just fill filter bags with crushed coral and toss it in my sump
