What if I reduce it to 31"? I have read the 1/2" is ok for 48"x30", and mine would be 44" not 48" - trying to stay at 1/2", because glass thicker than that goes up in price a lot.

1/2" should be OK for going up to 32" high for a plywood build. If the front plywood frame is 3" all the way around, then it's really only 26" in water height that the glass will be supporting. So it all depends on the dimensions of that front frame.

Well I just measured the glass on my 155g and it is 48"x31" and 1/2" - so I am think this is ok? How wide should I make the frame for it, and how much should I have the glass overlap with the frame?

The glass on the tank you measured is probably Tempered. I have a tank with those exact measurements.
Are you getting tempered glass?
If not, It may be ok with the frame but with this kind of thing I always try to be extra cautious.

It is not tempered... the bottom pane of glass is, because it is maybe only 1/4 inch. I think I may just mimic the glass on my 155g and do 48"x 30"x 1/2" thick
