I was looking at using some black pvc pipe with elbows and end caps with this topfin air 8000 we have sitting around, in either the 125g or my daughters 75g that she doesn't know she's getting for xmas. Planned to drill small holes along the pipe just to provide extra oxygen and 'effect' in the tank. Has anyone done anything similar to this before? Any suggestions in the best way of doing it? I w as thinking of the pipe going down the backside of the tank and on both left and right sides with the front left alone.

I would purchase a bubble wand with suction cups or a long air stone for that effect. They are inexpensive.

From my experience with air pumps the air is going to bubble out of the first hole it comes into contact to... and not much else.

You're going to have to drill some really really reeeeeeally tiny holes for that curtain of air look.
