I got the black sand from Petco. You can also order it on Amazon and the shipping isn't terrible. It's not quite as fine and reasonably priced.

Dont want something that would possibly mess up the filters....

Is the Petco sand easily stirred up ?

Be aware that black sand tends to point out and highlight every piece and fragment of poop that settles on top of it. If this is something that really annoys you then you may want to reconsider or be ready to vacuum poop daily

Mine is in a tank with 2 sponge filters and I haven't had any problems and can't see it being pushed around the water column. Not sure with canisters or a sump though.

I use Black Diamond 20/40, blasting media. 7-8$ for a 50lb bag. I just picked up 4 backs of it yesterday actually from Tractor supply. 4-5 years ago when I had my first 75g It's what i used (3m color quartz back then actually), and it's currently in my both of my daughters 20 gal tanks where they have plants that are thriving (had to remove them from my 125g due to being too hat)

I'd look in to that if you don't feel like paying pet shop premiums.

the best are the colored quartz products. colorquartz, spectraquartz, PermaColor Quartz. you can probably get it for not too bad since estes is in NJ. shipping is the killer.
