Would this be too much light?

Goig to buy a 33gallon. It's 48"x12"x12". Was looking at the odyssea 48" t5, it's 108w I believe.
Is this overkill and will I just be scraping algae all day? It's for an african cichlid tank. Would I be better off with going for the 36" light fixture?

At a 12" depth, 105w is a lot of light, so yes, you're looking at a lot of green algae. Since you're probably going to have plants, how about several smaller, inexpensive LED strips off Ebay?

I agree, you're going to end up with an algae farm. The mbuna will appreciate some of it, but you'll soon be overrun with that much power and only 12" depth. Even if you later changed the setup to a planted tank, you'd likely need to run CO2 at that PAR.

A nice LED will keep the power consumption low and still bring out the fishes colour.
