What type of cats? There are over 3,000 species of catfish from all over the world. Their environments can range from fast flowing, rocky riffles where small Noturus species (Madtoms) live to the stagnant, shallow blackwater habitats that Doradids (Talking/Armored Catfish) inhabit.

Studying your pet's natural habitat is a very wise thing to do and should be a part of the keeper or prospective keeper homework. Not always can it be emulated in our tanks or even ponds but it's important to know your fish's needs and 'drathers.

There are purists, who strive to create a biotope or something of sort. There are people who pay attention to the basic needs of their fish. And there are others who don't. And some folks float in between :) It's probably a bell curve with the meatiest part populated by the basic-needs-caterers.
