I have lots of experience with ponds and freshwater aquariums up to 55 gallons but have never had a cichlid tank before, but I want one now. Once I build the stand, and find the leak, then get set up with heaters, a pump and filter, I'd like to begin stocking it with cichlids. I would prefer brightly colored mild mannered cichlids.

Questions include:

1-Filtration-Anything special? Please describe the best filtration system and anything else needed for a cichlid tank.

2-How many inches of fish per gallons of water?

3-Any additional gadgets needed? An air stone? A sump? Special filtration?

4-Everything else

It all depends on what cichlids you keep.

They are messy fish, I'd recommend a sump with good mechanical filtration and good circulation/turnover.

I keep africans. I really like them. I have about 20 in a 90g w/ a 40b sump. The tank is nowhere near capacity. I don't know of a rule of thumb for stocking. It's all about managing aggression and finding a happy medium
