It sounds like fungus. A trick I used was to empty an inner health plus capsule or two into my tank. The good bacteria soon ate all the fungus

Sounds like probiotics. I've also noticed a reduction of algae on my driftwood since I started using them.

When did you start the tank?
Or did you do heavy changes, like many new plants or fish, new filter...?
It could be colonies of bacteria as well as fungus.
A pic could help.
