So I am looking to get back into the fish keeping game, and the only filter I have left is a FX6 that was used on my 125. Well I downsized and moved into an apartment, and my plan is to only keep a 40 breeder.
Would is be okay for me to use the FX6 on the 40 breeder, I really don't want to have to go buy another filter. I know I can close the valves a bit to slow down the flow, that won't mess up the motor/impeller will it?

Thanks in advance.

you can do other option add more media sponge 20 filter or add more bio media to slow down the filter water flow

^^^I think it still cause a hurricane in the 40B.
Adding valve to slow down the flow might cause the kick back force on the impeller and kill it over time, you talking about slow down a flow that suitable for 400G tank to 40G tank here :D to much is too much.

Why dont you sell the fx6 and use that money to buy a smaller filter and fish?

Or you can make a DIY spraybar with larger holes to reduce the velocity of the water entering the aquarium.

I've got a 40b with 2 whisper 60s and a fluval 406. That's a huge turnover rate but it's spread out throughout the tank. It didn't turn my tank into a blender or a washing machine lol.

If you build a spraybar I dont see it being a huge problem.

The reason I don't want to sell the FX6 is because at some point in the future I would like to start up my 125 again, and I simply love the filter.
I do have a couple AC50s laying around, but this tank will be in the living room and I hate the noise from HOB filters, even with the water level high.

I will probably try and create a make shift spray bar.

Any suggestions on what to stock the tank with, specifically a fish that can live in a 40b and likes a pretty fast flow of water?

You could just turn the knob on the output end to restrict the flow as much as you want
