Silicone! I used tiles before in my 120 amd didnt silicone them in. At first i thought it wouldnt matter as long as they were cut to size and fit nicely. It worked.for a few months, but eventually gunk kept getting under the tiles and i had to lift each one during waterchanges to clean under them. Tiles are great! I personally would recommemd them over a bare bottom, especially since theres soo many decorative styles to choose from. But sealing them in place is a must!

Are there any particular varieties that are not aquarium safe?

I love slate but I have too much of it in my other tanks.

I was thinking regular ceramic tiles. Glazed or what not.

Im sick of my bare glass bottom on my oscar tank

I just used ceramic and cut it to size with a wet tile saw. It was pretty cheap too. But im not sure on what kind of silicone is best.

I think GE1 is good for that application. No need to seek out high strength industrial rtv silicone.

I've used GE1 to hold slate to the backs of multiple tabks. One has held up for over 3 years with no issues
