90 gallon

Stock:

1 Blue Acara

1 Geophagus sp. Tapajos Orange Heads

1 Guianacara sp. affin.

1 A. heckelii Threadfin Acara

2 Albino bristle nose plecos

4 Buenos Ares Tetras

3 Boesemani Rainbows (for now)

2 Butterfly (Hillstream) Loaches

1 Clown Loach (I know they school... His mates died and I'm not going to replace him when he goes)

The Plan:

4 or 5 Corys (undecided on what kind)

15-20 replacement dither fish*** (replacing the rainbows)

The Catch:

Going to buy a T5 HO lamp, replace my daylight T8 to a stronger 6,700k T8 and (shudders) attempt to provide a more natural environment by adding certain (unappetizing) plants.

Looking to add Ludwigia, Valisneria, and Anubias. (I know about the uprooting tendencies and I will attempt to remedy that by protecting the roots with plastic "egg crate" ceiling light diffusers, cut to size)

I know a good deal about tetras, but my wife wants color, and the larger tetras, like Buenos Ares or Colombian are mostly silver. Serpae Tetras, which are a nice orange, are fin nippers, so that won't work with my Threadfin Acara. The majority of really colorful tetras are too small for when the cichlids grow.

Any advice on "colorful" dither fish?

I'm leaning more towards 15-20 lemon tetras, but I probably won't go to my LFS to see if they are stocked for about a week or so, just curious if anyone else has better options. I don't want to do hatchets, and as barbs are asian fish and I would like to keep this a regional biotope, so I'm thinking that barbs and rasboras are out.

I keep emperor tetras with my acaricthys and red head geos.
I have Columbian blue tetras with my aequidens metae and chocolate cichlid. The chocolate is small, so time will tell if this grouping works or not.

Yeah... I'm leaning towards the lemons... I was kinda hoping that someone would come up and say they've had success with serpae tetras (I really like them), but I don't want them messing with the Threadfin. I really like your pictures. We have similar fish; that's awesome.

I've always liked bleeding heart tetras (more than lemon tetras, but that's a matter of opinion). They grow fast, get quite large for a tetra, and when males display to one another they turn a deep red color. I've kept them with heckelii and had no fin nipping problems.

Buenos Aries Tetra is plant destroyer so careful when buying new plants :D (in my experience most soft leaves plant are Buenos target minus Jave Fern, they pick on anubias new spout out leaves cause its soft at that point)
