When to add co2 to a tank

So I'm thinking of adding a few maybe 5 Java fern to my future dovii tank in hopes that he won't shred them since I hear they taste bad, anyway if he does leave them alone would I need to add co2? Or plant food? It's a 220 gallon tank and like I said I only will be putting 5 plants in there
