I'm looking for a pump to be used as a return pump in a sump...
sadly only Chinese brands are available here but I came across many pumps and have trouble understanding the difference..

1st set of pumps

2nd set of pumps

now I know these are categorized into two different categories as pond pumps and submersible pumps...

what exactly is the difference between these? Pond pumps use a lesser wattage than submersible pumps..but If i'm not wrong they're also used submerged..
can I use one of the pond pumps in my sump instead of a submersible pump? (electricity is somewhat expensive in Sri Lanka)

flow rate I require is about 5000 LPH..tank is a 150 gallon with a 45 gallon sump..stand will be 3 ft high so the pump has to pump 5 ft minimum..

if these pumps cannot be used , what other options are available to me? we use 220V here so pumps manufactured in US might not work :(

Pond pumps/submersible pumps are basically the same, all are centrifugal pumps.
Compare the lift (head) and power consumption to fit your turnover needs.
Size of the unit may a factor, as to how much space is between top of sump and bottom of tank as far as fitting the pump in, and room for your arms when doing maintenance.

thanks for the reply....
It's not gonna be a problem...stand will be 3ft high and I can remake the sump to accommodate a larger pump..

my current pump can't handle the 3/4" overflow I have in my current 180..

Pond pumps usually are more robust, consume more power, and have really long heavy guage grounded cords.

That being said, I like both, but prefer pond pumps.

They consume less power in ones I have sent..that's what confused me..

I think I'll go with a pond pump..what I wanted to know was whether they can be run 24/4 like usual pumps we use in our tanks...
