I underestimated it....

I'm down to 2 with a divider with one in bad shape. At 1.5 - 2" they're brutal on each other. i have 2 stashed in an old divided 20, but the other 6 hunted as a pack stressing the weaker links to bloat until 2 left. Even my grammodes aren't this bad.

I do have a stunner male atleast and a possible female.

Damn...that is brutal. When you had all six what size tank were they in? I've noticed with aggressive cichlids they're more aggressive in smaller tanks.

75 with some hiding spots. Fish all around 1.5" +/- . The suspected female didn't make it. I thought I could head off aggression before it got out of hand, but I was wrong.

Red variety. Somewhat expensive lesson learned on that one. Never seen fish harass as a pack like this. No hierarchy whatsoever. I do have one fine looking male all alone in his 75 though. I don't think I have one female out of the 3 left.

My buddy has 5 left out of his group so maybe he will have an extra female.

I'm going to let him get bigger along with the best looking out of the other 2 males. Then try again for some quality females with a truly compartmentalized tank setup.

It took me a few attempts to get a good pair... Males are very picky it seems and they'll only really spawn when they're a decent size....

I saw a video of an amphilophus pair in a tank. Guy had flower pots upside down in his tank, with a hole drilled to a size that only the female could fit into. She would go into and out of the pots, male would try to follow her and couldn't, it was pretty slick. That'd be real handy if the female's a good bit smaller than the male--and the fish are vicious--which it sounds like these are. Pretty easy to try.
