Hi there, I'm from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia where some of the Snakehead species are native and legal. And the aquarium fish trade brings in many types of Snakeheads.

But finding them is not a frequent thing. I have been looking to find Northern Snakehead / Channa Argus to no avail.

Recently I asked a local lfs shopkeeper who brought in Pseudomarulia from India if he can get me Channa Argus / Northern Snakehead. He said he will give me a call when he does. I can't wait!

I was wondering if you have seen Northern Snakeheads in your local lfs. How much are they being sold for?

I just love this monster!

Please don't bring US Snakehead agenda into this thread. Not everything about Snakehead is about the US.

Lol, Taker, you suuure enjoy your SH don't you? I like them also, but being illegal and hard to get, I don't spend much time researching them. Are all the pics in this thread of the Northern species you're looking for? What species is that green, black, and a hint purple from the last thread?

Lol I love Snakeheads since childhood. One of my uncles was crazy about Giant Snakeheads and that's how I got influenced. He had an adult specimen and took care of it with such pride. Everyone respected the fish for its aggression and size, it was so fierce.

And then there were all kinds of stories about Giant Snakeheads breaking tank glasses, biting off owners' fingers, attacking swimmers, 5 to 6 feet specimen sightings in the wild, killing monkeys and storks and what not. The Fish is basically a local legend. I'll share a local article with you later.

Then one day I said I wanted my own Giant Snakeheads. Here they are called Toman (toe-mun) Harimau and Harimau means Tiger. I was encouraged by my uncle and their family but they kind of smiled because I was just a little kid. But they gave me a 1 and half feet plastic tank and feeder minnows.

Everyday I asked my father to get them for me and waited. Suddenly, one morning my father surprised me with baby Giant Snakeheads. I was the happiest kid.

They were the most brutal and action packed fish I have ever owned. They grew fast and my father updated the tank size. But I couldn't handle them at that age and had to give them away once they became juveniles (8-9 inches long).

My parents felt they were just too aggressive and I was just a primary school kid. My mom even called them evil fish lol but I was loving them so much. I will never forget how one grabbed the head of a minnow and the other grabbed its tail and both did the death roll ripping it apart. The water was a little bloody at times during feeding. Everyone would be speechless watching it.

And that's the Snakehead you are referring to; Channa Micropeltes / Giant Snakehead:

Don't they just look badass? Ever since I had them nothing could replace it. It just doesn't feel the same again. I understand why some people keep only one type of fish rather than being a general fish keeper or hobbyist. Because that's the fish that made them get an aquarium in the first place before they got to know about any other fish.

Growing up I've learned that there are so many other species of Snakeheads and I'm getting to know them. Yes those pictures in my first post are all Northern Snakeheads.

Now I have one Emperor Snakehead, one Platinum Northern Snakehead, a pack of four Channa Pleuros and one Channa Striata from Thailand. Looking to get the original Northern Snakehead. I love the looks. And then one day when I'm ready I'll get my Giant Snakeheads again. :)

Sharing an old article from the year 2006. This article speaks of the terror of Giant Snakeheads in the lake of Malaysia's National Zoo:

Attack of the ‘Toman’

KUALA LUMPUR: Prized birds at Zoo Negara have been falling prey to an unlikely predator in its lake – the ikan toman (giant snakehead fish).

Zoo Negara Reptile House and Veterinary Department supervisor Jamsari Mohamad said the fish, considered the dominant species in the lake, were becoming increasingly unmanageable and were endangering the bird population in the zoo.

He said the fish attacked in the morning and afternoon, with the birds sustaining injuries in the feet and neck, while some had also been reported dead.

‘THIS BIG’: Jamsari says the giant snakehead fish is a danger to the birds at Zoo Negara

“We used to have mandarin ducks some years ago but they are all gone now,” he pointed out.

“The fish have been living in the lake for as long as the lake has been there, and it is difficult to estimate their number.''

It was only three years ago that the zoo authorities found out that the ikan toman had been attacking the birds.

According to Jamsari, the zoo staff now net the ikan toman every two or three months to control the population, but the fish reproduce very quickly.

MEAL TIME: A worker feeding birds at the Zoo Negara lake recently. It is believed that very little food is left for the birds as the giant snakehead fish will gobble up everything first.

“It is also risky to try draining the lake to catch them as this will endanger the other fish species,” he added.

He said zoo keepers fed the birds – which include painted storks, white swans, pink black pelicans, little green herons, black-crowned herons, black-headed ibises, Egyptian geese and black swans – with 60kg of ikan kembung (black mackerel) twice daily.

“But it is believed that only about 10kg of the food is left each time for the 300 plus birds as the giant snakehead fish will gobble up everything before they can start eating,” he added.

He said an aquarium was under construction at the zoo and the fish would be one of the main attractions once it opens around the middle of the year.

“We have been keeping the fish caught in the lake for the aquarium for one year now and have more than 10 fish in our collection,” he noted.

Jamsari said the zoo had also been organising annual fishing competitions since 2004 to reduce the lake's ikan toman population.

This year, the competition will be held from 8am to 2pm on April 2.

It is limited to 300 participants.

The registration fee is RM70.

Article above. I'm sure you have heard the name Redline Snakehead. That's them:

This is exactly what they looked like when my father brought them home. Very active and personable. Awesome personality. And here are videos of babies:

Very cool, except the video isn't working for me. So Redline is another species? Even cool looking young. About 10 years ago, there was an article about someone finding a SH in the grass at our local park! That's when I started looking into how interesting they are.
