Polyurethane Foam in filters

Hi,

I have an Eheim 2262, and I wanted to run some filter floss in the canister, but I real that it can become entangled in the impeller.

I managed to find this foam for bedding underlay:

It says 100% polyurethane, but I was wondering if it was safe for aquarium use.

Any idea would be great!

I use the Poly fiber rolls from Wal-Mart (in the craft section) that can be cut to size to fit in your filter. I've had a roll that i bought about 5 years ago and still have plenty left. I don't think i would use polyurethane, don't know if that's safe. If it's made for matresses it may have some chemicals in it that might not be safe for the fish.

What do you mean Polly fiber?

It's commonly called quilt padding or batting. Its in the craft aisle.

I wouldn't use the egg crate foam strictly because of how tiny the pores are. I don't think it's coarse enough to flow water and not clog up immediately. but I could be Wrong

Thanks for that, I thought using that egg crate with really fine pores would get my water super clear!

Will the batting do the same?

tiny pores do polish the water very well, but clog very fast, in a canister this is no good.

The batting will do an excellent job, I use it and it filters down to a micron level to where dissolved solids are not detectable by the human eye.

The main benefit is the stuff costs next to nothing and is disposable.

Update...do not use that stuff in your tank..came home from work and a list a colony of 6 really nice clown loach....

Egg crate stuff has been removed,I have bought the batting and it's going in tomorrow.

That sucks. So sorry to hear about your loaches. I wished I'd seen this earlier. Foam mattresses contain a load of chemicals, especially flame retardants. Yikes. Thanks for sharing, though. This thread will save lives in the future.

Yes I'm really gutted, some of them were 15cm!

But the strange thing was they all died displaying full color, loaches when they die usually go white!
