Is there an easy way to determine the sex of severums? I have two gold colored ones that are about 2 1/4". I seem to remember reading that male severums have red markings on their gill plates and head, especially when mature. Any truth to this?

yes face markings are the general for sexing sevs- but super reds are a little off.. so it may not always work. let me see if i have a pic of my pair to gether to see if it held true.

ok thanks. At what size can you tell? The 2 I have don't appear to have any facial markings. I saw some at the local PetCo the other day that are slightly smaller than the two that I have, but a few of the fish had red markings on their heads.
Congrats on Moderator.

Great looking severums. At what size did you start to notice the markings?

Thanks! Honestly never really looked for them until they started to act pairy... maybe 4 inches?

3 - 4" the males should start developing worming on the face. It tends to start on the cheeks or the nose.

Thanks. The two I have show no signs, but they are still somewhat small. I looked at the ones in the store again yesterday, all are smaller than the mine. Two fish in the store stand out as having red markings on the head, which is quite noticeable compared to the others in the same tank. I may purchase one and hope it is a male.
