You can own the but I believe they have to be purchased from out of state or by a liscenced instate hatchery. At least that's the assumption I've made since there's a lot of threads on here and nanfa about the legality of natives in CA.

I think it is legal. I never was able to find a law that states that sunfish are illegal. I know you have to do what divemaster said when it comes to getting them. I got all of mine online from out of state and I might get my first sacramento perch from a hatchery this june if they can get a new broodstock. Do not collect fish from the wild. the only time you can collect is with a scientific permit.
