I was wondering who still uses these. They are still one of the easiest and most versatile filters ever made. I use them for many applications. They are a great way to use Peat in my black water tanks, I place a thin layer of floss on the bottom fill with peat and add another thin layer on top. Filled with carbon is an easy way to remove meds after treatment. You can fill it with bio-media to add extra bio capacity to a tank or any number of chemical substances Zeolite, Phosphate removers, Purigen, carbon etc. designed for a specif purpose all without having to reconfigure your regular filtration system. Some of my low tech tanks only have a box filter filled with floss. They remove debris and aerate at the same time. They come in various sizes similar to sponge filters (which is another great filter IMO). For speciality applications and small tanks they are in my experience hands down the best filter ever made.

If you use these I would like to hear about how, where and why you use them. Maybe some of the newer hobbyist can learn some new tricks for some old school technology.

The combinations and uses are almost limitless.

I still use them. On smaller tanks like 30gal and under I think they are the best option. They polish the water unbelievably well. I dont think many small HOB power filters are worth anything. cost next to Nothing to run and it costs pennies to clean them.

I got half a dozen of these from the LFS for a couple dollars each. They are so awesome. No airstones to replace, I can run a whole gang of them off of a few watts. I actually have 4 of these full of biomax in the sump of my 90g (not running) and 4 aponge filters running in there too. They are great for Jumpstarting tanks. You could even grab a handful of ceramic rings from running a canister, toss it in a box filter and you're cycling new tanks like a boss ..uploadfromtaptalk1427822305931.jpg
Here's one in an old tank

My old man passed away in December. I emptied all 9 of his smaller breeding tanks into a 75g at my mom's thrift store. I used all of his old tacky ornaments. What retro memorial to an old school fish keeper would be complete without ugly round green box filters and UGF plates?

Yeah no real down side to them and they're cheap enough to use all over for everything. Great in a hospital tanks too. They are an old standby that still has plenty of relevance today. Like I said earlier maybe some new hobbyist will see this and give the venerable Box Filter a try.

Wanted to add more bio media for my pumpkinseed sunfish tank, in addition to the bio wheel hob. So, I thought about a box filter due to its low maintenance. I wanted one with more bio capacity and didn't really want an air pump as the power source, so I made my own.

Pretty clever set-up. I like that, a new variation on an old standard.

Use them with my .5-1" fancy goldfish in 40b tanks. These are by aquatop, got them when some lfs was closing think i paid 3 bucks a pop. Couple per tanks with a sponge filter..

Thank you Senor! I wanted this over a sponge because I hate cleaning sponge filters. With floss, you just throw it out and they're dirt cheap. Also, with the water pump, its about dead silent in operation

My first job as a kid was at a LFS and I'll never forget the disdain I had for days spent cleaning row upon row of box filters. It brings back too many bad memories to use them present day
