I was wondering who still uses these. They are still one of the easiest and most versatile filters ever made. I use them for many applications. They are a great way to use Peat in my black water tanks, I place a thin layer of floss on the bottom fill with peat and add another thin layer on top. Filled with carbon is an easy way to remove meds after treatment. You can fill it with bio-media to add extra bio capacity to a tank or any number of chemical substances Zeolite, Phosphate removers, Purigen, carbon etc. designed for a specif purpose all without having to reconfigure your regular filtration system. Some of my low tech tanks only have a box filter filled with floss. They remove debris and aerate at the same time. They come in various sizes similar to sponge filters (which is another great filter IMO). For speciality applications and small tanks they are in my experience hands down the best filter ever made.
If you use these I would like to hear about how, where and why you use them. Maybe some of the newer hobbyist can learn some new tricks for some old school technology.
This one is loaded with Peat in my Altum tank.
