I had been fishing a local pond and kept noticing some attractive fish with red tails. I brought my 9 year old daughter to the pond and we netted some up, they are Golden Topminnows. I set up a 20 long tank for her, and after reading a bit about top minnows range and tolerance of brackish water, I decided to make the tank brackish so that we can also have some sailfin mollies. Yesterday I took my daughter crabbing (we caught 10 and a half dozen..yum). She started throwing the cast net and picking up a bunch of sheepshead minnows and small sailfin mollies. We've added them to the tank and they look great. The sheepshead minnows are in spawning colors so the males have a lot of red and the iridescent blue stripe on top of their head is showing. The mollies are nice, but I know where a population of much larger, much prettier ones live, it's a little over an hour away, but when I get the chance I'm going to head that way to collect some. I'll post some pics when I get a chance to shoot some.

Sounds like a great day out!

We're definitely going to need a bunch of pics of tank, catches and outing

I'll try to get tank/fish pics this evening or tomorrow, depending on how much homework we've got to do. Here's some pics of the outing

She's 9 and throws a cast net well, opens it up every time.

She ended up wearing half of the marsh home with her

Nice that your daughter is taking an interest in fishes and aquatic critters. Let's see some tank pictures.

Ok, here's some pics of the tank and the fish. Sorry the fish pics aren't great, whoever made up the phrase "Like Shooting Fish In A Barrel" obviously wasn't shooting pictures.

The Tank

1-IMGP6761.jpg1-IMGP6747.jpg

A few of the Sailfin Mollies (Poecilia latipinna), including prego females

Sheepshead Minnows (Cyprinodon variegatus variegatus), they wouldn't keep still, the only thing on their mind right now is nookie

1-IMGP6749.jpg1-IMGP6740.jpg1-IMGP6739.jpg

Golden Topminnows (Fundulus chrysotus), these are very cool mellow fish, at first the females look plain but when they catch the light they have lots of gold flecks on their sides

We also have a few grass shrimp in there, no pics of them yet.
