I have kept them. They do well. Very peaceful, but you probably want to avoid aggressive tankmates.

Nice white crappie in your pic.

Work well in aquaria, they're very mellow though and do best in either species tanks or with other peaceful fish they can't fit in their mouths. I'd go at least 75 gallons, 125 or larger would work better. Very difficult to get on dry foods and most will never take dry, consider it lucky if you can even get them on frozen.

I'd shoot further than 75 gallons. I've caught several 15" black crappie. They're very annoying to fish for here because crappies are intelligent. I found a spot in a small river where you can see DOZENS of crappie... I never caught more than one each day... you pull one in and the others stop biting all together.

Like everyone said, peaceful fish that are easy to keep. Mine pretty readily took frozen food.

Ive never had crappie but all the various sunfish I used to keep - p.seeds, green sunnies, gills - all took to sinking pellet cichlid food very easily

My crappies won't touch any prepared foods, not even frozen foods.
