    Just picked up a shovelnose...

It's a baby, about 3-4". I've got him in my 150 along with my o, jag, common pleco and a albino choc pleco. They don't bother him a bit; I was worried about the jag at first, but no probs there. I will post a pic as I am not really sure what type of shovelnose it is. The lfs only listed it as a shovelnose; no other description-no size, feeding habits, etc. My basic question is what is the best food for it at this stage. I am trying sinking baby pellets but I only see him hiding vertically behind my plants; he was so still I had to reach in and touch him to make sure he was still alive!! I would assume he would scavenge from the food I feed my other guys; goldfish, earthworms, assorted veggies and algae wafers...

it looks like he does not know how to eat pellets or 'dead' food. maybe try live feeder fish if you are really desperate to feed him. If not, then try using a strong smelling raw meat to feed him like fish or beef cut into small pieces. If you are adamant about feeding pellets then your best option is to keep dropping a few near his mouth and be patient. its a battle of attrition due to the fact that fish will never readily starve themselves to death unless they are sick. good luck

A lot of the cats don't like to eat with the tank lights on. Especially young ones... Our RTC was picked up at about 2" and disapeared almost as soon as we put her in the tank. Turns out she was hiding in a ornament...3 months later she was too big to fit anymore and we got our first good ...shocked....look at how much she had grown.

If it swims verticle a lot of the time I'd say without a pic that's about 95% certainly a Lima shovelnose. Also known as Sorubim lima in the scientific circles. Good find.

Oh and I usually feed new limas krill or blood worms depending on how big they are. Crush the krill if they are really small.

Good job! I love mine, but they are kinda strange behavorially, and they tend to breath heavily according to mine, and to other members.
