I feel proud of myself after this feat. I recently moved from NYC to Texas. A 3day drive. I have 5 tanks. Most people might get rid of the fish, right? I couldn't do it. I read everything I could find about how to move fish. People use coolers, don't feed the fish, maybe a battery operated air pump, and hope for the best. I devised a stress free way to take everything with me. I'm not saying that Im the first one to think of this, but I wanted to share it anyway.

I was in a pickup. I lined four tanks up in a row in the rear of the cab- all 15gs. The big tanks I put in the back of the truck. I put the fish in with the same water they had had in their tanks. I bought a device (at Pep Boys) that uses the cigarette lighter but has a standard 3 prong socket at the other end. I hooked up a power strip to it, and hooked up small filters and air pumps to that.

I took my time. The temparature stayed constant, I fed them as usual, and I covered the tanks in saran wrap to stop the sloshing. When I stopped at night, (at freinds houses) I ran an extension cord into the truck. After 3 days, only ONE loss (a puffer in my brackish tank.) ! People saaid I was crazy, that it couldn't be done. I hope this helps anyone thinking of moving with their fish.

That's not a new method. But, if you came up with it without any guidance then, my hat's off to you.

Welcome to MFK. I hope you can glean a lot from the site and help others out as well.

Before you list the fish you maintain, you may want to look at the following list. Texas is not a state that likes tropical fish keepers.

Texas Restricted Fishes List:

In order to manage and conserve our natural resources, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department must protect our state waters against the introduction of non-native aquatic species. Fish, shellfish, and aquatic plants that are not native to Texas may compete with native animals and plants for food and space.

The organisms listed on this page are legally classified as exotic, harmful, or potentially harmful. No person may import, possess, sell, or place them into water of this state except as authorized by rule or permit issued by the department. For more information, contact Joedy Gray, (512) 389-8037.
