florida gar "Lepisosteus Platyrhincus" are much more common than the spotted gar, but they are very similar and extremely hard to tell apart. its safe to assume that if you buy a spotted/florida gar it is indeed a florida gar.

they grow to roughly 24" give or take a few. a 6' x 2' tank footprint will house one comfortably for several years, but will more than likely outgrow it given proper diet and husbandry.

mine does best w/ water temp around 78-80.

they will eat almost anything including live and prepared foods as long as you put the timeand effort into their diet.

any more questions feel free to ask.

it is normal for the florida to reach 12-14 inches in its first year. so i would have to say a 55 is unsuitable for a florida for any extended period of time. i kept mine in a 75 for its first year and he did very well.

possbally in 6 - 7 months when i go to college n start working with my dad n get some money, my goal is a 120, if not a 100. would a flordia gar be ok in a 55 till then? and would it be ok in a 100 or 120 for life?

the 55 gallon may be doable for 5-6 months...maybe, but i would recomend it.

the 100-120...no way.

a Florida gar may not be able to live in a 100g or 120g for life, but it could live in a 120g wide for many years. captive Florida gars don't seem to often grow over 24" or so, and even that takes quite a long time. i've have Florida gars that are several years old and still only 15-18" long.

if you are looking for something that would last for a long time, go with a 180g...the 120g wide would hold the fish for a while, but eventually the only 4' length of the tank may prove restrictive to the fish...6' length is a good size--
