I would appreciate a link to the updated 2007 CITES lists - Unless if the 2006 version is still valid?
Thanks

I found it, however I don't think I have it right. I know that a few Agaves are listed, but this list does not include any. I must be looking at something different. Help me out. Thanks

Here's the updated proposal list from the 2007 CITES Convention (fish only). I'm also including the list of species already covered by CITES.

2007 Species Proposal Results (fish-wise)

Would list the critically endangered Spiny dogfish shark on CITES Appendix II, providing protection for the species by restricting international commercial trade in dogfish products -- FAILED

Would list the porbeagle, a large shark, on CITES Appendix II, providing protection for the species by restricting international commercial trade in its products -- FAILED

Would list all sawfish species on Appendix I, prohibiting all international commercial trade -- PASSED with Australian amendment to allow trade in one species

Would impose trade restriction on European eels by including them in Appendix II -- PASSED

Would provide CITES protection to 26 species of red and pink corals -- FAILED

WOW - My first post-made-sticky!!!! Awesome!!!

I have a question - Can somebody tell me the difference (and why there are two) between the IUCN red list, and the CITES lists? For example...
I found the Agaves on the CITES list, but not the IUCN red list. What gives?

the IUCN red list is just a list of the conservation status of animals species.
CITES however, is a international conservation agreement so that that the pet trade doesn't threaten an animal's survival rate in the wild.

That's strange that it's on the CITES but not on the list..
Did you look it up throughly? Is it a plant or insect?

Agaves are plants - Agave victoria-reginae, to be exact, but I know there are many other threatened Agaves, but they aren't on the lists... Weird.

Most of the Agaves are protected on a local level rather than in international trade..

It is my understanding that only Agave parviflora is appendix 1 and that live plants (not seeds) of A. victoriae-reginae and Nolina interrata are Appendix 2 by CITES.

This does not mean that there are no additional protection laws on a state or federal level (be that in the US or Mexico).. I do remember seeing somewhere that A. victoriae-reginae is a protected species in Arizona and can only be taken with a salvage permit or collection permit. I'm not sure about New Mexico, Texas and the Mexican states specific laws.

Naturally due to CITES you can not bring a Mexican plant (but you can bring the seeds) into the US without proper papers as this would be international trade and covered under Appendix 2...
