Just scored a used Eheim W/D 2229 off ebay (hopefully in good shape, listed as so) and am researching media.

So far I've found that a few people are mixing media types like the Eheim MECH ceramic rings into the first bin and then using the Eheim Substrate Pro for the other two. Is this a good idea? I might try this but am tempted to stick to the Substrate Pro or EHFISubstrate only; as Eheim recommends.

Its starting out on a 30gal but I will be upgrading to a 72gal Bow soon. Stocked with Malawi Mbuna Cichlids (5 males! need the bigger tank so I can actually keep a female around, probably still have to part with two males; 3-Auratus, 1- Kenyi, 1- Snow White).

What are your experiences with this filter? any tips???

What is the difference between the EHFIsubstrate and the Subsrtate Pro?

Is this device going to help me much with mechanical filtration (beyond the biowheel 350 already in place)?

Will I need another filter on the 72gal besides Penguin 350 bio-wheel and this canister??

Thank you for any info its much appreciated!

Here is the link to the 2229 - http://www.eheim.de/eheim/pdf/en/anleitungen/afilter/wet_dry_filter_2227_2229_2327_2329.pdf

I am using this filter exactly as Eheim recommends. It came with the EhfiSubstrat Pro media when I bought it in 2004. That is the only media in all 3 baskets. It does accumulate some debris & fish poop that get trapped by the 'cocoa puff' media but its main function is as a biological filter.

The EhfiSubstrat looks like small gravel. The EhfiSubstrat Pro is round like cocoa puffs. Both are made of sintered glass that has a large surface area for the nitrifying bacteria to grow on. The Pro is supposed to prevent any compacting of the media due to its shape.

Hope that answers your questions. Be sure to read the manual because there are some height restrictions for this filter so the wet/dry function works properly.

Howdy,

Using EhfiSubstrat throughout is doable, but a waste of money: The pores in the bottom layer will clog, transforming it into a mechanical media only. You can do that with EhfiMech for half the $$$. But no harm is done if you use EhfiSubstrat only.

It'll be a good standalone filter for your 72 gal.

Congrats and welcome to the Eheim club

Eheim media is expensive, but worth it in the end.

I'd rather buy from seachem.
