The secretion from their glands on their necks contain a substance called Bufotenin. It is a hallucinogenic drug that is also found in some mushrooms and a couple seeds. In some countries in the orient it is used in traditional medicine. Its supposed to be like LSD or mescaline, but has some poor side effects that have prevented it from becoming a widely used drug. It only last up to two hours as well.
A lethal dose for a human is significant, but for dogs who have hearts which beat at a much faster rate it is much more seriously. Most would experience cardiac arrest.
Cane toads are a dangerously invasive species. It is native to central America but have invaded many countries and islands. It was introduced to Australia to control a pest beetle destroying the crops. When the populations exploded in Australia, they found that the toad completely ignores the beetle when given chances to eat other things. They are so large that they will eat anything including native toads, snakes and small mammals. Here is the kicker... not much if anything eats them!
These toads are comparable to Plecostomous. They will destroy native wildlife, habitats and have no predators that consistently hunt them.
Oh one more thing... The secretion can leave a burn if left on skin. Use bare hands at your own risk, and toss out gloves afterwards. You can apply presure around the glands on the neck to see the sectretion. It wont hurt them, they are not fragile.
Interesting frog. Interesting drug.
No I have not tried it.
