i bought a second hand unused xp4 (boxed as new), i have set it up and its really quiet compared to the 2 external fluvals i had running, i done a search on the xp4 and people keep saying they have heard bad things about them, please tell me what these bad things are that other filters dont suffer from, so far i think its a better bit of kit than the fluval 205 and 304 i just removed.

oh its so quiet :)

my only gripe about the fluvals is the noise they make, i had their external filter years ago and quite often they were noisy, hard to remove trapped air and the motor rattled on and off, the new ones are the exact same, they have made many improvement from the older external filters yet the noisy motor and trapped air is still a problem with them .

I also have 3 XP3s and recommend them for people all the time. I think they are a great filter. And the XP4 should be even better...more room for filtration, etc. I like them!

I have an xP3 and I think it's great. The xP4 is just a larger version with 4 baskets instead of 3 and a higher flow rate, for an unknown reason they seem to quit working after a little while on account of a few members here.

The xP3 is very easy to use and a great filter in my opinion. Very quiet and dependable. I only have 2 complaints. The first is that my powerjet nozzle somehow got clogged and I had no way to clean it, I ended up running it without the nozzle and without even the spraybar which I don't have a problem with. The second is that the intake isn't directed to the filter's very bottom, a small percentage of the water flows through the small gaps between the baskets and therefore skips a few baskets of media. Minor complaints. It's not the perfect filter but very close to it IMO.

I didn't know Ron Jeremy was a fishkeeper...

I love my XP2 & XP3. They are great filters. They are just not that great to use when you have 50 tanks lol. IMO XP4 aren't worth the money though.

Why? Maintenance is hard or what?

well i just have started using my xp4 and i think the valves are easier to remove than the fluval vavles, the fluval you need to lift 2 levers, the xp4 only 1 lever, the clips that hold the lid down are so easy to use so i cant see maintenace being a problem, the baskets are easier to remove and fit compared to the fluval one where you have a sponge 'wall' down one side and narrow baskets which are a bit more awkward to use.

i dont know what is considered too expensive for the xp4 but i got mine second hand even though it was unused and new in box, i bought it for £87 delivered and i hope to maybe get £60 for my 2 fluval externals.

i wont be sad to see the fluval go the 304 is tempremental as one minute its quiet and them the motor is rattling and when you clean the filter out it takes ages before all the air is out so it makes more noise. The xp4 i primed it to fill it with water and waited the 2 min as it suggests and switched it on, silence and no trapped air :headbang2

maybe the full retail price of the xp4 is a bit steep but usually you can get it a lot cheaper online or on ebay for a price thats worth it new.

First of all, Rena used the same size baskets as their first 3 versions of the Xp series and increased the flow. This could make the filter clog faster.

i love my xp4, works great as mainly a bio filter, but not so great as a mech. filter if you want crystal clear water, which it can do but you will have to change out polishing media weekly.
