Hi All,

I need help to identify which medicine that is available in Malaysia that will help me fight "bloat" that usually occur in Cichlid species.

I know metronidazole helps but I am not sure we have this at Malaysia. I will appreciate to know the name of the medicine and the manufacturer. Thanks!

Thanks,
Hoxy

Hoxy, do you have epsom salts available in your local pharmacies?

Yes... I think I saw it in LFS. The reason I'm asking this is because I'm going to get 30 Tropheus Duboisi probably on this Saturday (based on availability). So, I want to be prepared for the worst. Does Epsom salt help to prevent or cure the bloat?

Epsom salt helps relieve bloat issues. As bloat is internal, the epsom salt can be ingested to relieve the pressure of bloat thus pushing out possible air and food trapped in the GI tract.

You shouldn't have any problem finding Metronidazole. It's also known as Flagyl which is a medication to fight bacterial infections of the stomach, skin, joints, and gynecological-related areas of humans.

OK... I will be on the hunt for Flagyl and Epsom salt. I hope I managed to find these items. Thanks!

Ouch... seems like we dont have epsom salt and flagyl at any LFS I searched near my place. Just the word metronidazole also not known.

In the end, I just bought a random "internal bacteria" medicine. I will ask around at farmacies for epsom salt but I will be having my doubt. Sad~

Maybe I need to order from abroad? Any clue and advice how/where to get these? I plan to ask the fish store that I plan to collect my Duboisi this week to look around for the said items for me. I hope they can manage to obtain the items from their business partner oversea...

I think my red Jewel is positively has bloat. Sad case~

Thanks Oddball, you are right... these can be found at farmacy only. It is under the name Metrogyl. But seriously though... who exactly propose to use this human drug on fish at the first place... lol. The pharmacy asked why I need it... I said for fish... and they gave me a weird look... hehe.

There are plenty of meds intended for humans and cattle that absolutely work well with fish. Discoveries are done by science. For instance, strains of bacteria from fish are collected and different meds are used to test the reactions of bacteria to them.
