So a few weeks ago I had another one of my 8-9" A. falcirostris cuda's jump out during the night. Thats 3 this year. :irked: that have tried to run up the down stream of a HOB filter. I guess they want to be salmon.

so i am down to 2 big guys.

I noticed TFD had some A. heterolepis the same day the fish jumped. So i went ahead and picked up a few. They are only about 2" but one day they will cohab with the big boys.

here's some pics
tank shot of gap they have escaped from
dead cuda
remaining big boys
new little guys.

pretty funny how i have lost 3 cuda's this year to jumping and the lid is up in the pics.

But rest assured that the lids get closed and weighted when i get done feeding.

Sorry to hear, bigger weights on top?

well the first jumper did knock the lid off into the tank and was on the floor infront of the tank the next day.

So i started putting a gallon jug (8lb's) on top of each lid. But the last 2 have been found behind the tank. And there was water on the lids infront of the filters. So i think they are just trying to run up stream basically.

But that is just a guess.

I need to quit messing around and get the sump going and take off the HOB filters.

These things are just massive jumpers. During a water change I had the 24" tall tank drained down to about 8-10". To rearrange the decor when i got my ray. And i seen 1 of them jump up and over the front of the tank with my own eye's from a stand still. No swimming start.

Thats atleast a 16" vertical jump with no swimming start. lol

looking great. they grow pretty fast eh? They look really cool once they reach that size and bigger.

Got current in there? I think current keeps them occupied and distracted minimizing spooks.

I had 5 cudas in a grow out tank. Been there for a couple months, no jumping. They do jump though, i lost a big one earlier this year to that. Something must be spooking them, may be lights too bright? I noticed my cudas stay under cover

yea man I was suprized in the falcirostris growth rates. I got them in march at 2" and they are 8-9" today. so 6-7" in 8 months.
Thats a hell of alot better then my other cuda's.

The current in this tank is not what i would like. It has a 10-11x turn over rate. But its from back to front and not left to right like it should be.

There last tank had a left to right current with a 24x turn over rate. But it also had bright live plant lights on a timer. And that tank is where the other 2 jumped from. Which I understand because of the lights.

But there tank now doesn't have any timed lights or bright. I only turn them on during feedings and at night.

I have noticed a difference in them since I added so dithers. They no longer spook and hang out in the middle of the tank. Before they would allways hide and spook easily.

So fingers crossed for now.

yea dithers may be the trick. i did have them mixed with armatus while they grew out, then with tarpons twice their size. the tarpons make big sweeping hooking loops at food and this didnt scare them. both in open top tanks.

THANKS TO ALL

And I think that the dithers may be the trick as well. These fish were in a species only tank since day one. The only other fish they had ever seen were feeders. lol

Now if I could just get a ID on my dither fish so i can keep them alive. All will be good for the last 2 big guys.
