I'm not much of a carpenter so I hope this will work for my tank. I still have to cut out the cabinet doors and put a piece of plywood on the top. I plan to have the top plywood hand over the edges all the way around about 1/2" with trim under it.

Materials list and prices so far.

8 - 8' 2x4 - $20
1 - 1/4" 4x8 plywood - $17

1lb of 3" screws - $4
1 box of finishing nails - $4

So far in wood alone it has run me $37 which isnt bad at all.

Now for the pictures of where I am at right now in the build.

you guys need to stop with the diy stand threads... my gf has been giving me the "its time for a bigger tank" look... soon as she figures out that bracing the floor prettymuch involves just putting some 4x4s on some paving stones im screwed..

level lawn? lmao. I feel like I am on a wooden roller coaster every time I mow.

It wasnt hard to make the stand. Framed it all in an hour or so. I just hope this will hold.

I figured since I was going to have the top plywood hang over by about 1/2" all the way around, that on top of the plywood i would put something like this standing upright tracing the edges of the tank.

any opinions on doing this? The rail or whatever its called will sit about an inch high.

trim is nice... dunno how it would look with the rest of the stuff in yer house but a bit of decoration does a lot to improve the overall look of a stand
 
Looks good. I would have double braced your 3 foot spans (like a header with jack and king studs), but that is just my opinion. I tend to over build stands anyways. I see that you doubled up on the 2x4s for the legs. That should be more than enough plus with the plywood backing, you should be good to go.

I would definitely go with the trim. It will make it look more like a piece of furniture instead of a box with a tank of water on top of it. Post more pics as you complete it.

Ok i decided to redo this stand just a little bit. No one here at the house liked the way I was doing it and they pointed out another way. I completed turned the stand around and put 1x3 over the showing 2x4's. (sort of caped it in a way)

Well here is my dilemma. I only have half a sheet of the 3/4" left. So I can either add doors to this and no bottom inside the cabinet. Or I could use the 3/4" plywood to put a floor in my under area. But if I do that I am going to make some curtains for the openings.

Also in the one pic I set a piece of the rail trim in place to give an idea of what it will look like when its done.

Staining I was thinking like a red mahogany.

What do you think? doors and no floor or floor and 2 curtains.
