The Dark Side
I'm thinking about adding some Freshwater Mussels into a sump refugium.
I like the fact that they filter the water & are suppose to be great cleaners of natural water-ways....

Would this be a good idea or will there be problems with them in an aquarium???

Mussels release a sticky substance during breeding which makes a nasty mess to the filter. And if it makes it into your tank the offspring attach themselvs to your fish's gills. I would leave them out of the equation. I had 6 in with my barras and cats and the sticky stuff went everywhere and took months to clear up.

never heard of it. They might not be able to find enough to eat though and end up dying and reaking havoc on your system. Could be wrong though. Try it and let us know

Aussie mussels don't have a glochidium stage, so that part's out (not that glochidia are harmful anyways). The usual complaint with mussels and clams is that an animal can die and rot in tank for days before you realize something's wrong, ruining your water quality. I hadn't heard of folks having trouble with the actual gametes before.

If you decide to use mussels, be cautious and add only a few small individuals.

How do they breed???
Just turn the lights out & put the music on??? LOL
There's 2 about 1.5 inches at my LFS. They want 8 bucks each...

I could put them right at the sump entry on top of the sponges....
They might get more food that way???
