Like the title says...I wanted to know how hard it would be to breed just grass/ghost shrimp? And can it be done at temps around 55? I could add a heater if I HAD to. Just give me an idea please...It would be nice to have a little supply of munchies for my fish. I love feeding live shrimp its soo fun lol. Thanks

Chad

Ghost shrimp are one of the harder shrimp to breed. They have a free floating larval stage before they assume a benthic lifestyle. While they are free floating they will need to eat micro foods which are kind of hard to supply. If you have a heavily planted established tank you may have a chance of getting some shrimplets. Also some of the ghost shrimp you buy at the LFS will be a brackish water species, These will need BW in order for the shrimplets to survive. It would probably be cheaper/easier just to buy them in bulk and keep them until feeding time.

What is an easy to breed shrimp?

How big are the fish you are feeding them to? if large one of the machabrachiums might be better but I think your temp is to low. If the fish are smaller look into scuds or fairy shrimp, they are both very easy to breed. The fairy shrimp look like brine shrimp but get about 3/4"-1" long, they and scuds can be bought online but the shrimp usually come as eggs. http://www.netfysh.com/home.html?http://www.netfysh.com/prods/ce6.html

I'd do cherry shrimp if I were you. They breed like rabbits, but they're just an investment up front.

I don't know why they're so expensive, I think they're sort of new to the american market.

One store sells them for 10 dollers a piece, but at others its 5 for 20, or like 6 bucks each. Im waiting till next local fish club meeting to get some.

Cherry shrimp do best in the mid 70s F. I don't think they will do at all well at 55F

I bought a dozen cherry shrimp online not too long ago and they are already breeding for me. It cost me $28 with shipping on aquabid. I have them in a 15g breeder with some moss balls and anacharis and they seem to love it. The temp is 78F and pH is 7.5. As to why they are so expensive, who knows, but I doubt that will last for long. If it does......I'll be in the shrimp business:)
