There are other threads around, too. But I vote barebottom because it gives you more control of how much waste is in your tank. Gravel holds plenty of turds and not enough beneficial bacteria. In a barebottom you just net it out or use a powerhead to blow it into your filter.

i dont know man I must be old school or something I think bare bottom tanks look stupid....imo

I like planted tanks, so bare-bottom is pretty much a non-starter for me . . . also, I like tanks to look somewhat natural, so bare-bottom - - or tiled - - just wouldn't work

Both suck IMO. Bare bottom I have tried and hated how unatural the tank looked. Gravel also sucks to maintain, been there done that. Sand FTW! All day long, good sand just makes a tank.... Again, IMO...

Bare bottom with tiles or bare bottom with nice driftwoods. substrates always looked good but always more work to keep clean.

I like the spray textured paint on the outside of the bottom. It goes on and looks like sand. I prefer bare bottom and on first glance everybody that looks at my tanks thinks its sand untill I point it out to them.

I use all 3. Gravel, sand and barebottom. Depends on what fish I'm keeping. My flowerhorn and hogaboomorum both have barebottoms. Tanks that have my loaches and bichirs have sand.
