Sharks that should be banned from public sale

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wobbegongs, nurse, blacktips, whitetips, bonnetsheads, and anything else that reaches over 3', just for the fact that 99% of the average private fish keeper can't adaquatly house them.

I agree....there are a ton of fish that should not be so readily available

Wow!!! :WHOA: Honda12 - you do realize that by banning ever shark over 3' in length, you basically saying to ban all but 3 species of sharks - including most of the Bamboo sharks, the Epaulette, The Horn shark, &the Port Jackson's.

The only species to make under that size limit is the Coral & Marbled catsharks(at about 2' in length), and the Grey Bamboo(at about 2.5ft in length).

i furmly beleave that shark's should not be in the public fish trade there for i never have them in my store or order them for someone.

Since I've asked the question - I'll give my thoughts on it.

Given the fact that Shark Husbandary is a growing area of fish keeping. And that there are private owners who can afford to build large shark tanks/pools (in the 10,000 - 40,000gallons range).

So here's my guildlines for sharks that should be banned

- any sharks that grow larger than 6.6ft(2.0 m) in length
- any sharks that are highly aggressive or potential dangerous to man

Here's my list of Sharks that should be banned from public sale.

1.) Lemon Shark - this a very large(over 10ft long) & highly dangerous shark(actually #10 on attacks on man) and the fact that it's usually priced under $700 - makes fairly affordable to potential Shark hobbists(I mean if someone will pay up to 1,000 for an Angel, what $700).

2.) Nurse Shark - yes, they're a very hardy shark - but, also can get very huge - up to 14 ft long. And the fact that they can be found in LFSs for $ 200- $ 300 makes them even more dangerous(especially to the shark).

3.) Zebra Shark - another shark that gets very large (usually at least 8ft, but can grow up to 11 ft) . And the fact that Zebra pups can sale for about the same price as a nurse pup - is almost equally dangerous to these sharks.

4.) Spotted Wobbegong - Also grows to about 10ft.

5.) Ornate Wobbegong - grows to 9.5ft

6.) Blacktip(Not the Blacktip Reef) - grows to almost 8 ft.

Note: I didn't include the likes of sand tigers, sandbars, dusky, Bull or Smooth/Scalloped hammerheads - as these generally aren't usually available to private owners - but only to public aquariums.

Yeah, I understand that, most people cant provide for anything other than that.

ever heard of a bull shark stories entering fresh water?? I hear at least Three of them. I hear one is in south america Amozon basin and another in maine, another in austrail and two of them for sertain i can proably find on national geographic.

Yes, But the Bull sharks migrate into freshwater on a regular basis. The truth is major freshwater rivers like th mississippi, or amazon are in fact major pupping grounds for Bull Sharks. It's only part of what makes this the most dangerous of all sharks.

Now if you want to get really scary - think about the fact - that if you have the permits & about $6,000-8,000, as well as an Olympic-size shark pool - you could possible own your little "man-eater".

Sorry - but I tend to disagree. The main problem is lack of good education or just simple research about Shark Husbandary. Not the room or fund to keep sharks.

The simple fact is a crafty & knowledge hobbist could easily go out and get the materials to build a small pool(or simple buy a small pool) that roughly 6-8ft diameter about 2 ft deep (about 420-750 gallons) and build a true shark pond, for less that the cost of a 240-300 gallon aquarium. In fact for the cost of the aquarium alone (usually about $1,200 to $3,000 depending on glass or acrylic) - But for about $2,000 you could get the pool, sand, salt, and a good wet/dry sump.

Then you could safely(for the shark) - house an adult Brownbanded Bamboo, a Horn, a Epaulette, or even an exotic Japanese Wobbie(not all together of course), if you desired.

A larger pool like a 10-12ft pool(but you would need a building to house it) - cost about $4,000, could house Port Jackson's, or even smoothhounds.

But the more active sharks like Bonnetheads, Sharpnose, or Blacktip Reefs would actually require a custom built tank/pool to safely house - but could be done.

It's all a matter of how badly you want it.

I totally agree. Some of the bigger, more aggressive sharks should be banned from the trade. However i think the dumbass people who buy them knowing nothing about them should be banned! Any shark can live in captivity, if provided with the adequate space. I mean look at the aquarium in Atlanta with 4 f'in whale sharks!! Or the Waikiki aquarium with Great White sharks!! They may not be private owners, but they build dreams for people like me! Therefore i totally disagree with people who say that sharks esp. over 3 ft. should be banned. I pride myself on my shark ponds/pools. Honestly there is nothing quite like having your own pool of sharks that you can observe, study and interact with. Its like a way into their world! What needs to happen, although it never will, is people to get educated before they make impulse purchases! Its all the irrashional people who put a bad name on shark husbandry! I think we should shoot all the idiots, then the gene pool would be rid of them, and we can all live our lives in happiness! :D
