I want to know what sand substrate you people use for your rays, I am thinking of just putting maybe just a couple bags of black tahitian moon, and leave it somewhat bare bottom (this is later this summer), but I want to know if there are any absolutely wonderful substrates for them.

Please don't skimp on the details (especially where you got it and how much $), I just feel its easier to make a thread for this than to ask every single ray keeper on the website everytime I see pics of their tanks.

most people will use estes... but the 3M sand has come up for this too... few people have used tahitian moon but I was told its hit or miss... could be a lil to course....

Tahitian moon doesn't seem to hurt my motoros big or small.
Carib sea also has a fine gravel "peace river".
i have both in different tanks no problems.

Does the tahitian moon sand get sucked up the siphon at all? I like the look of the caribsea one you mentioned.

i use BD aquarium sand but not sure if it's available outside of UK

I use estes marine and natural sand got it at petland for $7. I'ts non buffering so it won't raise the ph. Plus I like it cause I like watchin the rays blow into the sand looking for food. It's not really harder to maintain than gravel except when vacuming the tank.Plus the stingrays are always tossing it up stopping the build up of gases in the substrate. It doesn't stick to them just make sure you only use a layer about 1-1 1/2 inches.

I use pool filter sand. Heavy enuf not to get sucked up and very cheap.

this is the first that I have heard of the 3M sand..., Where can this be purchased....??
