Are thr roots of the pothos ivy plant safe for use in a HOB refugium? (Leaves exposed of course). I know they are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Has anyone used this plant and if so any effects on fish??
I grow pothos with the roots hanging in a lot of my tanks and it's fine. My african cichlids nibble the roots, and once when I tried submerging it my severums and clown loaches ate the leaves with no ill effects.
Pothos thrives with it's roots in high nutrient water.
Pothos isn't really toxic by most standards, but it contains calcium oxalates, which are insoluble and buildup in the body and so can cause gout. Something would likely need to repeatidly consume large amounts to be affected strongly.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium_oxalate
here are others that work in water, I will be doing peppermint eventually. Right now I have photos, spider plants, silver tree (i beleive) and arrowhead in my 330gal.
