I just received a shipment out of Columbia and received these gorgeous Geos. I wanted to get some feedback from Geo keepers to know if these are the real deal. Last time I saw surinamensis was in the late 80's early 90's. If these are in fact true, I will place them in one of my breeding programs.

If they are from Colombia, then no they aren't ... wrong country can rule that out.

This was exactly my first thought.

Most characteristics appear very similar (as with many other species), however central caudal patterning appears too stripey, as opposed to spotty, like true G. surinamensis, which Weidner lists as a defining characteristic.

With the fish being sub-adults though this could change, however granted they're from Colombia, it seems unlikely.

Thank you for the info. Where would the true surinamensis be coming out of. Is it possible they were collected and brought to Columbia. These are still very nice fish and I am not sure I want to list them up for sale.

this is what ive found..

South America: Suriname - Sarramacca, Maroni and Suriname Rivers

i also have some of these and they were sold to me as G. surinamensis...

There are Geophagus all over the world labelled as G. surinamensis, just none of them actually are, but usually a very similar species like G. brachybranchus. Geophagus surinamensis is almost a slushpit label that the "not sure what that is" species are labelled as.

True Geophagus surinamensis, hence the reason for this thread, are basically phantoms in the hobby due to the lack of exports out of Suriname.
