Love this forum, read lots of topics, but don't post much ... I have a question for you guys ... and if you don't get the 'is it real or is it Memorex' thing - well, I'm getting old, I guess!

Granny question ...

We purchased 3 Synodontis Granulosus in April. We knew they were juveniles when we got them at about 2”, but we don’t see the distinct white tips like the other Granulosus out there. The picture below shows the comparison between ours (bottom) and a generic example I found online (top). Notice ours has the nice small dotted pattern, but the fins clear edge vs the white. Also, no white whiskers. Of the 3 we have, this guy is the largest now ~ 3” and lighter in color. The other 2 are dark, but no white tips either – see the pictures I took tonight, also below.

We'd appriciate your comments.

I am far from an expert on these guys, so for all i know the white develops over time. I have never personally seen one without the white tips but then again I have never seen them as small as 2 inches either.

The thing that would worry me is the dorsal fin.... The top picture of the commonly seen Gran has a dorsal fin with a strait back that runs to the tip making a point. The pictures of yours seem to be rounded from the back of the dorsal fin to the tip - again not sure if this developes over time.

I am sure someone here will have the answers.

These fish are being bred in Russia and the Cech republic, unfortunately they are hybrids, think there is a article on planetcatfish about it, think its by Lee finley.:)
