My dad owns a fly fishing magazine that has been going now since I believe 1990 or 1991. He and his partner do 10 months a year. No January issue, and November/December are tied together so that they get december off for the holidays. The magazine serves 7 states including PA, NY, MD, DE, VA, and CT. It is called Mid Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide. It includes fishing articles and ads and is a free magazine, in which he gets paid through people placing their ads in the magazine. Then the people that place their ads get a certain amount of magazines to place on display in their store or business. People that don't live in those states can get a yearly subscription and get a magazine sent to them once a month. I believe he has over 800 subscribers all over the world including Great Britain and Australia.
People like Lefty Kreh, Bob Clouser, Ed Jaworowski, Charlie Meck and A.K. Best are some of the regular writers. They also have regular photographers and artists. Some of the regular ads include Orvis, Cortland Line, Gander Moutain, and Sage. There are a lot more that include smaller fishing shops within the 7 states. This magazine is only for FLY fishing.
Basically after doing it for 15+ years, my dad is focusing more on his river guiding and writing for a local weekly paper, While his partner is in bad health and is no longer able to do the work. He and his partner have run this magazine by themselves and have a specified publisher and graphic designer. He works out of his home in north central PA and his partner just recently moved to NY.
