The theory of genetics makes more sense to me, as it explains why Asians and Black arowanas seem less prone to DE than silvers.

However Ive had a situation where ive moved my silver (8") from a 75 to a 180 gallon. He became very restless in the bucket during acclimation, bumping into every part of the bucket. By the time i moved him into the 180, the right eye was slightly dropped. Possibly due to head trauma?

So I guess both theories have their own validity.

Just to clear things up when you state genetics, are you refering to inbreeding or just the general genetic make up of each species?

referring to just the general genetic make up of each species?

I have two now 14-15 inches in another tank so far no drop eyes but also i have never heard the top getting hit?

black/blues are a different fish yes but is there bone structure that much different that they can take a blow to the head no problem?

You'll have to do the bottom too. :D

Actually the only way I think this could be done would be a huge tank, say 10'x10', with no cover. Possibly slopped sides or at least round. Basically simulating natural conditions and eliminating most all potential head banging hazards.
LOL if I get it on the bottom its going to be a pain to clean, and ill need to find a way to completely seal the bag from water. I agree that the tank might be too small if i cover up all the sides, it might turn into 5 foot by 18" by 18". Ill see if my wife will let me get another 300 gallon rubbermaid tub LOL but i highly doubt it. And maybe ill get like a mesh cover and put it inside a bag, and leave some air in it, so even if it jumps into it, itll be sort of like a cushion and then drop the water level a bit. Good thing i have an extra sump for it so water changes wont disrupt it. No human factor in it at all, except during feedings where ill just toss it in and be done in a few seconds.

I have also yet to see aros under 16" with DE. Maybe size has something to do with it too, I have no clue.

my uncles HBRTG jumped out when it was 10 inch it banged its eye like 5 times by jumping on the floor 1 side had DE

So like i said, I rarely see asian aros with DE but in this case, this asian got DE after it jumped out of the tank. I dont think genetics would allow asian aros to only get DE after they hit their head.

my silver jumped but never got DE and its 15~16 inches im lucky =D

Why do only "Larger Silvers" develop DE...if the Head Trauma holds true (not saying that it doesn't)...wouldn't even smaller silver develop it, let's say at a size of 3"-7"....
You guys say it happens when they bump their head by jumping and darting around but even at a smaller size the silver will still do it occasionally....but never results in DE.....

I still think it is genetic and maybe they just have more fragile eyes then other arowanas and the head banging just quickens the process?
