My Ammonia and Nitrite problems...
(I don't know if i'm in the right forum here but here it goes) I have been running a 53g for just over a month, i am using a Fluval U4 Internal Filter and havent experienced any problems so far. My tank is currently stocked with a Senegal Bichir (4"-5") and an Albino Plecostomus (3"-4") (Of which i have heard i can't keep in that tank for life, so don't worry, i definitly won't)
However, 2 weeks ago i tested my water (Doing the water change a day before), and there appeared to be some Ammonia and some more Nitrite (Sorry i can't provide exact readings) so i later that week i done my water change and added all necessary water treatments (Only this time i further used Nutrafin Waste Control). The next day i tested my water and there was more Ammonia and a little more Nitrite (Nitrite was a pale purple and Ammonia was a pale lime-green, both second section away from 0 - sorry i couldn't put it any better - nothing severe)
So, does anybody know why or how this is happening and how i can cure this?

Maybe the tank was never fully cycled, and thus having fish in there will result in ammonia and nitrite due to not having enough bacteria to feed on them.
BTW how does the fish react? Are they eating? Active?

My best bet would to take out the fish into a cycled tank and let the 53 gallon cycle more OR just risk it and leave the fish in there as they seem to not be bothered at all.
Same thing happened to my 180 gallon this summer when I was away for 2 weeks, came home and water parameters shot right through the roof. Fish was all okay and eating, I left them there and kept up WC and in no time everything was back to normal. BUT I'm no expert, so lets see if we can tune some pros in first.

do you have any other tanks? If so swap a filter or even rinse a dirty filter in your 53g so the BB gets going. You'll be fine once the cycle completes.

Thanks for all the advice, it helps alot believe me it does, but no i have no other tanks (yet). I like your 220g Oscar tank btw, really looking good

I would keep up on the water changes. Sounds like the tank is still cycling to me.

Yeah, just add some Benificial Bacteria, and keep the tank parameters steady...

I went to my lfs and they said it should take another 2 weeks for the cycle to complete. Reasonable estimation?
