Try this, take the impeller out and just spin the blades around and see if it stops against the body of the magnet. Only thing I can think of is that the blade part is breaking free under load.

It does stop like it should.

here's what I was playing around with if I hook it up in the bathroom and have a bucket on the counter next to the tub and the canister sitting on the tube I can get it to empty the bucket into the tub. But when I put it under the tank won't pump. So it seems there isn't enough power from it to pull the water through due to the height.

Wow, I'm sorry you are still having problems with the filter. So far, you've done all the normal fixes that work.

Have you tried removing all the media/pads from the filter and running it that way? This would give you no restrictions due to the media.

Would you also please post pics of the canister assembled and sitting on the floor so we can see the hoses attached.

Also a pic of the entire impeller.

I'm just trying to cover all the bases here and I'm running out of ideas.

Howdy,

How long have you had it for? I think they come with a 3 year warranty.

I got the same results without media in it under the tank.
I'll try and take some pics later tonight, about to head out the door for my sons football game.

It's very old, far beyond the 3 year warranty. To give you an idea of age it says it was made in West Germany.

Nice! Gotta love Eheim.

How about ordering a new impeller? The magnet might have worn out after so many years. It's obviously not a matter of flow inhibition. It's either the impeller or the motor. Cheap and easy to find out if it's the impeller.

my only concern is I've spent $20 for the gasket and shaft and bushing and I'd be spending another $25 for the impeller. which if that doesn't fix it I'd be buying another canister. Which that $25 would be able to go towards another filter.

I've tried it under the tank without any media it with the same results of not pumping the water. But yet if i hold it up close to the height of the top of the tank it pumps water just fine.
