help - indo dats keeping dying off one by one

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If thr dats r dieing off as described, then it sounds like water quality related. Just saying a 12 g tank will not provide stable water conditions, for very long.

As for other members who have had success in using such small tanks, well 3 weeks ain't exactly a long time is it??

3 weeks and it was an uncycled tank. i dont think his issue is tank size.

3 weeks ,uncycled tank......

That's a great idea.....

If it's not tank size then it's probably water quality, rather than sick fish.

I hope no more die..

:ROFL::ROFL:
shows how good of a fish keeper i am.

i dont think it was the water quality.

i had 4 NTT's - 11 loaches - 22 IT's in the same 12 gallon for 2 weeks. then on NYE i saw 2 dead then i was like okay its my water and im going to move my ntts and loaches to my new 45 gal. so i did so and i came home from work and saw another 1 dead, then i was like okay another water change with prime. did a 50% WC, then it was good until now when i saw 2 dead. so now im stumped on what is causing the problem. its dying off like the NTT SDS. No signs of any heavy breathing - anger - charging of any sort to the fish. if all else fails im going to move them into the 40 gallon while i move out all my orinos and jardini to my 160.

also the reason i want to solve this problem is that im getting more indo's and i dont want them to keep dying off.

I'll forget I even read u kept 26 dats and 11 loaches in a 12 g for 2 weeks.

Again, 50% wc for 12 g is too much. The water params must be going up and down like a whore's draws! Have u tested water before and recently? What's your filtration? Sounds like on NYE, you had ammonia spike due to your stock level, even though you moved out some fish, may have been too late. Traces of amonia r prob still present which is why more of your dats died.

The 40g is a better idea. I would use that tank as a temp grow out. Keep wc to x2 per week at no more than 25% week. This will help keep water stable, and if tank is cycled, u should have no further problems. No meds unless u no what u are treating. temp at about 82 - 84 f, add 1 to 2 lbs of salt if your still worried.

Agreed.

Quite a string of luck you have there. I hope no one follows this example.

Bottom line is 12g or 10g in my opinion is just plain risky. It is more difficult to keep up water params in that small a tank with so many fish...regardless of the size...less known indos, which you are feeding live foods. There are just too many things to be concerned about. Temp should be anywhere from 80-85. You should use as large a (growout) tank as possible. And do a total of 50% changes per week.

There could be several reasons for the death...including having a sick group. The goal should be to eliminate all the "possible" reasons that you have control over (i.e. temp, tank size, water changes, water quality). I lost one but several of the ones I picked up had a bad case of ich so I anticipated some casualties. Gratefully, I only lost one out of 15.

Another thing to think about is the use of live plants in those extreme (around 90ish) temps. They will likely not last long. So make sure you lower your temps. I currently have 14 Indos and a pleco in a 55g with 5 anubias (4 large, 1 small), three pieces of driftwood (1 Malaysian, 2 Mopani), one aponagetan ulvaceous (that I need to trim down), and some java fern attached to the driftwood. I'm running two AC110s and two bubble walls and the heat stays at 80. Sounds like overkill? Well I've successfully grown out dats this way and it has indeed payed off. Regardless of those keeping 20+ fish in 10gallon growouts successfully or not, most of us experienced fishkeepers would advise against it.

I only treat with salt and as soon as I got my sick group, I treated the entire tank with salt and upped my temps. It works like a charm. Seeing that your temp is so high, please do not increase it.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I have over 60 iin a 40 gallon breeder with ZERO death.

Temp is too high, not enough dissolved oxygen

Stop adding vinegar !! Why are you adding vinegar ?

Adding vinegar at ANY amount will drop PH FAST. Your dats are dying because of PH shock. Leave water alone...just do 25% water changes every 2-3 days, keep temp a 78-82 degrees with plenty of air stone and you won't lose any.

Dats are one of the hardiest fish. I have owned over 100 dats and I have only lost 2. One was due to bacterial infection the second day I receive them and one to a busted bag during transport. They're all ranging from 3/4" to 17"
