Film on top of water; any ideas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is a protein and will almost always occur. Like Vamp said point your power heads at the surface
thus creating agitation which will in turn create more water surface and 02 interaction, putting
more 02 within your system.

Bro try this surface skimmer using hanging filter. I using this for my Ray tank I don't like the oily at top of water can cause unhealthy fish.

Isa,
Ingenious setup. Right now increased surface agitation has done the trick. Thanks, fr another solution, if I need one.

I've often had this problem too. While surface agitation worked a little bit you could still see it. I couldn't get the paper towel trick to work so I used a large jug and skimmed the oil off the top. Did the trick.

Also when doing water changes with a python, skim the top too so 1/2 of the hose is exposed to air. This will cause the built up proteins & oily layer to be sucked up regularly.

I usually find that the more surface agitation and airation I pu in a tank the less of a problem it is. If you let it get bad enough it will reduce gas exchange but it has to get really bad for that to happen.
