It has taken 2 days and a ton filter floss, thanks. I am using a 20L and Ive been told with such a short height I may not need Co2. Any truth? I am budgeted for it...so I am gonna do it anyway. BTW, I am looking for some grasses and ground carpets...an ideas? Will Hayward;4550153; said:It really depends on the mixture of the bottle. How much Co2 and sugar used, and also what size your reactor is. Sometimes you get a stronger but shorter reaction and sometimes you get a weaker but longer lasting raction. I'd say about every two weeks i refill, but I've only been using the DIY co2 for a few months now.
If fluormax is anything like Seachem fluorite, just fillerup and put some fine filterfloss in all your filters before the biomedia to prevent clogging. It'll be practically settled in no time at all.
height of the tank barely influences the benifit of CO2- light output is most influenced by the depth of your tank. No tank NEEDS co2, but for the benifits of a simple two week homade mixture and homade equipment, it is a very worthwhile addition. You said budgeted for Co2, are you buying a hightech pressurised system?we4wieners;4550399; said:It has taken 2 days and a ton filter floss, thanks. in regards to the High-Tech system...petsmart has a Co2 system for $35. I am very new to the planted tank...I have kept many differnt types of cichlids from Rams to Flowerhorns. But I think this is a real challenge. I do have a few ?'s if you dont mind. Will Hayward;4550409; said:height of the tank barely influences the benifit of CO2- light output is most influenced by the depth of your tank. If you are looking for some suggestions for specific grasses and carpet plant species, I can name a few.
Weiner, (lol) try a DIY system first before buying those cruddy systems. It'll take you $5-10 and under an hour buildtime. Put the $35 in a savings for a future "pressurised co2 system" that you can upgrade to much later.we4wieners;4550424; said:in regards to the High-Tech system...petsmart has a Co2 system for $35. 1.temp?
2.tank need to be cycled?...I can seed it from another tank if I need to.
3.HC is something Ive seen on here(carpet). I would like to start with my low lying plants. I like the grasses and carpets. Any suggestions for a beginner?
Thank you for your time. I will start the DIY Co2 system...(2ltr bottle) Note taken in regards to the HC. I have a beautiful piece of Anubias in my other tank. He will be heading in shortly. I did by the way place a few bags of bio-media from my other tanks into my filter. So, the process should be down to few days now. I "favorites" that link. Thanks again..one more. I have ordered many fish online, is it as easy with plants? Will Hayward;4550494; said:Weiner, (lol) try a DIY system first before buying those cruddy systems. Regarding ?'s... Not at all! Ask away.
1. Plants are mostly forgiving in this area. Should be decided upon choosing your livestock. Until then room temp should be fine.
2. Plants use Nitrates as food - A cycled tank produces Nitrates. While you can add the plants before the cycle, they will fllurish most when there is some Nitrates in the water. Again this is most important for fish, secondary for plants.
3. HC is beautiful, but could be discouraging to a plant begginer if it doesn't grow well, let alone melts to mush. In place of HC I would suggest Glossostigma elatinoides as a similar but much easier plant to grow. In lowlight non-co2 tanks it does well enough, in higher light with co2 it forms nice dense low carpets.
Other plants to look at: Sagitteria subulata- Dwarf Sagittaria, Elocharis acicularis- Dwarf Hairgrass, Pogostemon helferi- Downoi (translated: Little Star), Echinodorus tenellus- Pygmy chain sword.
